My trip to A Coruña was surprisingly very fun.
Before that trip I had never heard about that town. In my head, this town was a small typical Spanish town.
But no! It is really big and so fun to go too for a nice weekend.
I recommend to only go for one weekend because there aren’t many things to do in the city. But, if you want to stay longer, you can enjoy the exterior of the town and the region. It is really nice to visit.
To go there:
To go to A Coruña you can take the plane from Madrid or Barcelona. The airport is really small so there are not many destinations to come from. You can always come from Santiago de Compostela or Vigo by train. Or even from Porto by bus but be aware it is a 5-hour drive.
Accommodation:
When you arrive the best accommodations to go to are in the city center, not far from Plaza Pontevedra or by the seaside. It will give you the opportunity to have a nice view and to be next to all of the stores, restaurants, and the nice squares of the town.
Besides, if you are not far from Pontevedra and don’t have a car, then you will have access to most of the buses in town.
Things to do:
The things to do in this town are limited but really fun.
This town is really nice to walk around.
I recommend going to the port. One of the best places of the town. It is beautiful. The buildings are atypical and known for it. They are full of windows, hence the name of diamond town. The port has old typical fishing boats. And the port usually has a lot of animation. If you have time, you should have a seat and enjoy the view. You can get an ice cream at Bico de Xeado, one of the best ice-cream shops in town!
Then walk up to Plaza Maria Pita! It is a beautiful square, with the representation of Maria, a legend of the town. She is very famous because she won the war against the English and saved the town.
The square is full of different colors and has a nice ambiance. The beautiful building in front of the statue is the town hall. One of the most beautiful that I have ever seen.
Around the scare there are many restaurants. I do not recommend eating in these restaurants because I believe they are tourist traps. There are better places to go too, I’ll give you my advice later.
You should get your way up to the old town, were you can just walk around and lose yourself. It is really an agreeable place to be in and to discover.
The old center is really nice because it has many little scares with vegetation and restaurant. The buildings are really pretty and well preserved.
There are many museums there that are fun to see.
Plaza Arganza is really nice to go too. It is a square in the old center, full of vegetation. And the restaurants there are really friendly and tasty.
Walk to the Tore de Hercules, fun to see from the outside. This is a monument that is really special for the people that live there. I don’t think it is really necessary to go inside. Besides it is often closed because of the wind.
The Aquarium not far from Tore de Hercules is really fun and beautiful. If you ever have the time and opportunity to go there, I absolutely recommend. They have a room with the wall full of fish, it gives an immersive atmosphere that I loved. They also have an underground room that gave the same effect and that was decorated like an old pirate ship that was fun to go in. In this room the fishes are very impressive and massive. They also have a shark. It was so fun to see them from so close.
The beach is really aggregable in the summer, and beautiful to look at in the winter. The beach of Riazor, is the one with he best view of the town.
And the best place in town for shopping is Prazo de Lugo with all of the stores. And R. Compostela were the first Zara is.
There is also an amazing mall. The shopping center Marineda is one of the biggest in the country. At the top of it, there is a great food court, with cinema, game room, trampoline park and karting. It is full of great store. Primark is the store that is usually the busiest but in general the mall is not very occupied. It is a really nice and agreeable place to go to.
Food!
In the evening if you are looking for a place to eat, you must absolutely need to go to Rua Olmo. It is a street full of restaurants and bar. It is really animated in the evening and very aggregable.
If you are looking for a little snack Café Viecho is the best place to go. They have amazing quesadillas, nice coffee, and great smoothies. This café is usually empty and really agreeable.
At Rua Emilia Pardo Bazan, there are a lot of really nice restaurants. And the streets around are really nice and have good restaurants.
Fire Capitano is a good restaurant in the suburbs of the city if you ever stay around there.
Things outside of the city to see:
Around the town there are so many things to do.
If you love nature, you will love Playa de Cathedrals, Costa de Muerte, Ferrol, …
There are many castles around that are also really nice to visit. This region is very known for the magnolia flower, so these places are usually beautiful to visit in the spring.
Finally, other places you can go too easily is Vigo and Santiago de Compostela. I will write about them too.
Great tips !
